“Bucks Only” Is Frustrating, But You’ve Got To Like It Too

Ever since Minnesota adopted the “bucks only” policy in the early 70′s hunters have applauded it and hated it. For some it was hard to break the habit of shooting at every deer they saw. Then talk about frustration, it seems like every deer would carefully hide it’s head in the grass or behind some brush and before you could see it was a buck it was too late. Read More of the Story…

Touring Minnesota State Parks

Like tourists from other states, Minnesotans like to camp, see new and interesting sites and get away from the daily grind when the weekend rolls around. However, time, money and the boredom of a long drive convinces a lot of people that it just isn’t worth it.

Well, these excuses shouldn’t keep you from seeing some of the unique sites and interesting places in the state of Minnesota. Read More of the Story…

Game Laws Haven’t Changed Too Much In 100+ Years…

What hunter hasn’t dreamed of going back 100+ years to experience the endless flights of waterfowl, fish-filled lakes and miles of virgin land that once was found in our great nation. However, even then sportsmen were not given free reign to wantonly shoot or reel in everything that jumped or swam. Game laws around the turn of the 20th century were surprisingly rigid and penalties for breaking them were severe. Read More of the Story…

September Means Super Salmon Fishing…

Most Minnesotans are unaware of perhaps the most exciting fishing our state has to offer.  Each fall, pink salmon move in from Lake Superior to spawn in tributary streams along the North Shore. Sometimes pink salmon can be found in such great numbers that you’ll think you’ve suddenly been transported to Alaska or some far off fishing paradise. Read More of the Story…

Safety is Hunters First Concern…

No one, especially me, likes to drape a pall over the good times everyone has during our upcoming hunting seasons.  The sad fact is that there will be a few people who will be injured, or even killed, in hunting accidents this year. “Accident” strikes me as an inaccurate word for most gun related tragedies because the vast majority of the “accidents” are a result of carelessness or pure stupidity while crossing a fence or cleaning a rifle. Nature Photography Can Be Easy…

Nature photography has become more popular than ever. There are probably many reasons why, but one of the biggest reasons is people seem to becoming more aware of nature. Most likely because it is more threatened now than ever and who knows what will become extinct next.

Another reason is cameras are becoming more easy to use. Not too long ago, only highly skilled photographers with years of experience could turn out Read More of the Story…

The Walleye Challenge…

I don’t need to tell anyone in Minnesota how tight-lipped a walleye can be. I recall an instance a few years ago that taught me just how fussy old marble eyes can be. I opened up season on a lake in northern Minnesota, and as many did, I was excited about stringing up some walleyes. By noon I had only a few “cigars” to show for my efforts. The bigger fish were there, I could see them on the depth finder, but they completely ignored my baits. Read More of the Story…
