Smart Grouse…

Most grouse hunters were happy last year. The numbers of birds was up and odds were good to see a few. The increase in numbers doesn’t mean they are any easier to fool. I was walking a woodland road that had a thick carpet of clover growing on it. It was in the last half hour of legal shooting, just when grouse come out to dine on things like clover, so all conditions were right.

The old cock grouse showed itself up on a hill when Read More of the Story…

Fall.. The Nostalgic Season

Anyone who loves the outdoors could announce the arrival of fall without ever consulting a calendar. Just think about it for a moment. Don’t the winds and cool evenings of early September have a certain briskness that brings visions of trees in a riot of colors and flocks of birds hording in groups in preparation of a long flight.

Fall is a time for reminiscing. Now, more than ever, you will find folks sitting in a sun warmed spot, Read More of the Story…

Preparing for Fall Hunting Season

I have discovered, the last few weeks, hunting catalogs in my mail box. Yes, if you look down the road, fall will be rounding the corner, walking at a brisk pace that will bring it quicker than you think.

If there never was a calendar to tell the date, I would know fall is getting closer. I seem to suddenly find more interest in the circling flocks of ducks or geese than the walleyes I’m fishing for. I usually dig out my duck call and see if I can still make it sound like a mallard. Read More of the Story…

Tips for Opening Day of Ruffed Grouse Season

Ruffed grouse have always been a curiosity to me. One bird you encounter will be foolish and naïve, the next will be wily and shy as can be. These conflicting personalities can make grouse both a joy and a frustration to hunt. All the same, good grouse hunters will get their birds come opening day.

This conflict of behavior exhibited between these birds of a feather is most likely due to the age of the grouse. Read More of the Story…

Wild Game was Meant to be Enjoyed at the Table…

The hunting and harvesting of wild game and fish is not the only part that was meant to be enjoyed. The eating of properly prepared wild meat can be equally satisfying. The problem is too many folks don’t know what to do with it once they wrapped it in plastic and dropped it in the freezer. And, too often, that’s where it sits until it gets freezer burned and not fit for use. Read More of the Story…

Where did it go?

Jarvis was getting old and, oh, how he hated it. He really didn’t mind getting into his golden years, it’s just that it was cutting into his grouse hunting. The legs still worked OK and he was quick enough with the gun to get birds, it’s just that he couldn’t see very well the past few years.

For some odd reason, Jarvis could see birds fine as long as they were in the air, but as soon as they hit the ground he just couldn’t find them. It seemed he would spend most of the day bent over looking through Read More of the Story…
